SWIMMING

The annual Christena swim camp, hosted by the Swim to win organization, commenced on Tuesday 14 th July, at the Yachtsman’s beach. Chief coordinator, Terri Andrews noted that the camp will climax on Friday 17 th July, with the presentation of certificates to the over forty participants. The camp is now in its sixth year and as per usual, is sponsored by the Nevis Island Administration. Sessions are being held at mornings and afternoons and the children are being taught basic swimming skills such as floating, treading water, kicking, push offs and actual swim strokes.

The swim program was developed by international swim instructor, Anne Mc Lindon and was born out of the historic Christena disaster, which occurred in 1970. Ms. Andrews also pointed to the recent Apple Syder ferry incident, as another good reason why islanders should learn to swim. She also indicated that interested participants who want to go further, will also be taught, so that they can eventually advance to represent St. Kitts and Nevis in international competitions.
