MOE ESTABLISHES ST. KITTS PTA
Basseterre, St. Kitts: The Ministry of Education is moving forward
with plans to establish a St. Kitts Parent-Teacher Association (SKPTA), beginning with the first
series of zonal meetings held on Tuesday. May 05, 2026.
The initiative comes in response to challenges identified in the education sector, including
inconsistencies in operation among PTAs and school management bodies, and the absence of a
unified organization to represent PTA interests at the national level. Despite provisions in law, a
National PTA Council has not yet been established.
Mrs. Carol Boddie, Education Officer, Ministry of Education, said that the initiative is an early
step toward a local parent-teacher body.
“It is the first in a series of zonal meetings where we, as a ministry, are trying to establish a local
PTA Council. This is something that has been in our education act, and we are finally trying to
get some traction concerning that.”
Ms. Roma Richardson, Special Projects Officer, Ministry of Education, explained that the
formation of the council will unite school bodies to strengthen support for learning across the
island.
“The St. Kitts PTA Council is an initiative of the Ministry of Education that brings together
representation from Parent-Teacher Associations across St. Kitts. It is meant to be a unified voice
for parents, teachers, and students across the island. The council will work to enhance the
learning experience through advocacy, resourcing, and network building.”
The proposed SKPTA will consist of elected parent representatives serving as an executive body.
Members of the SKPTA will also contribute to the formation of the National Council of Parent
Teacher Associations (NCPTA), as outlined in the Education Act of 2005.
The SKPTA will serve as a central body to advocate for parents and schools, provide training
and resources to PTAs, and align their efforts with national education goals. It will also create a
structured and sustainable model for future PTA operations.
