NEMA URGES HURRICANE PREP DESPITE BELOW-NORMAL FORECAST

Basseterre, SKN: The 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially starts today, June 1st. The St. Kitts Meteorological Services is predicting a slightly below-normal season this year. However, local disaster officials strictly warn that a lower forecast does not mean we can let our

guard down. It only takes one storm to cause devastating impacts to our islands. According to the St.Kitts Meteorological Services, several global weather factors are helping to slow down storm development this year:

• El Niño: A weather pattern originating in the Pacific Ocean that creates stronger upper-level winds (wind shear) and a warmer atmosphere over the Caribbean. This makes it very difficult for storms to form and grow.

• Saharan Dust: Dry dust clouds traveling from Africa will bring hazy skies, but they also bring stable weather that prevents storm growth.

• Other Side Effects: Because of El Niño, our region is also expecting reduced rainfall and a dry, hot heat season during and after the hurricane months. Residents are urged to conserve water and stay well-hydrated. National Disaster Coordinator, Livingston Pemberton, emphasised that a below- average forecast is not a guarantee of safety and encouraged the public to review their hurricane preparedness plans. "This forecast must not lead to complacency," said Mr. Pemberton. "Major hurricanes can, and do, still form despite these factors. It only takes one storm hitting our shores to make it a devastating season. We cannot stop these natural hazards, but we can reduce our vulnerability by how prepared or ready we are. I urge everyone to think about their risks and prepare accordingly."

The 2026 Hurricane Season runs from June 1st to November 30th. For emergency alerts and disaster preparedness tips send a message to (869) 466-5100 which is NEMA’s WhatsApp number.
